When I first bought my firm from a retiring CPA and became self-employed, I set out to grow my business by getting local small business clients.
However, my firm was in a small, rural farming community in southeast Missouri. The town’s population is just over 3,000, and there are probably about 30,000 people within a 30-mile radius. I felt desperate to close any prospect who was interested in working with me, and I thought the only way I could compete was on price.
I reached out to every small business owner I could think of, and I got a few new small bookkeeping clients doing this, but it wasn’t long before I ran out of leads, and when I did, I was nowhere close to meeting the revenue goal I had set for myself.
I got discouraged. I didn’t see how I was going to grow my firm to the point where I could pay myself the salary I wanted.
But then I had an epiphany…
Instead of being a “jack of all trades” accountant to local businesses in my hometown, I needed to position myself as an expert within a specific niche and market my services online.
The problem was, I had been operating from a mindset of scarcity. I thought that my client base was limited to small businesses in my immediate geographical area, but that’s not the way it works anymore.

In today’s world of cloud-based accounting platforms, third-party app ecosystems, full-service HR and payroll solutions, and secure document portals, it’s never been easier to work with clients remotely.
The truth is, there are a virtually unlimited number of clients out there who need your help.
According to the Small Business Administration, there are 27.9 million small businesses in the United States, and every single one of them has to file a tax return.
After I had that epiphany, I spent the next several months developing a 3-step system to get high-paying virtual accounting and tax clients.
Now, I’m teaching my system to other accountants, bookkeepers, and tax professionals so they can make more money with fewer clients.
